DGF outlasts Perham on the gridiron
Glyndon-In a game of big plays, it was Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton who came up with the biggest one late when they recovered an onside kick attempt in the closing minutes from the Perham Yellowjackets, holding on for a 35-32 victory on Oct. 13.
The play spoiled a big night from Jenson Beachy and Martin LaFond. Beachy finished with 298 yards passing, completing 32 of his 42 attempts. LaFond finished with three scores, while amassing 188 yards of total offense.
The Yellowjackets moved to within three when Beachy rushed to the outside, picking up the first down and followed with a lateral to LaFond, who went 37 yards for the score, cutting the Rebel lead to three points.
The Yellowjackets scored 26 of their 32 points in an explosive second half, which featured Perham scoring two touchdowns in 26 seconds. However, they never held the lead, thanks in part to the running of Spencer Taves and Trevor Dufault. Both DGF running backs rushed for two touchdowns with Taves rushing for a 5-yard and an 81-yard score in the second quarter, helping the Rebels pull out to a 21-6 first half lead.
The Rebels used a strong ground attack, hoping to keep the potent Perham offense off the field. The Yellowjackets were stymied by penalties and turnovers in the first half, but capitalized on Rebel turnovers in the second half.
After Dufault gave the Rebels a 28-6 lead in the third quarter with his first of two 1-yard plunges in the second half, the Perham offense came alive. Ty Moser capped of a 12-play drive with a 1-yard score, making it 28-14 after Beachy converted the try.
On the ensuing possession, Moser fell on a loose football giving Perham excellent field position. Beachy connected with LaFond, for his second of three touchdowns in the game. LaFond made the catch and plowed through a defender for an 11-yard score, cutting the lead to eight.
Another DGF turnover gave the Yellowjackets great field position and they capitalized. Zach Peterson plunged in from 1-yard out, cutting the lead to two after a failed conversion.
The Rebels ate up some clock, converting a key fourth down and finishing off a 14-play drive with a 1-yard run by Dufault.
The Yellowjackets answered with LaFond’s third touchdown of the game when he took Beachy’s pitch 37 yards. However, the Yellowjackets would not get the ball back in the closing minutes of the game.
Taves finished with 223 yards and two touchdowns for the Rebels. Beachy completed 32 of his 42 pass attempts for 298 yards. LaFond finished with four carries for 120 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He added seven receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown as well.
The Rebels improve to 5-2 overall on the season, while the Yellowjackets fall to 5-2 overall. The Rebels are now 5-1 in Midwest District Red Division play, while the Yellowjackets sit at 3-2. Fergus Falls holds a 6-0 mark in the division and will take on DGF on Oct. 17 for the division crown. The Yellowjackets return home to take on Park Rapids Area on Oct. 17 in their regular season finale.
