Perham/NYM swimmers compete at Moorhead
The Perham/New York Mills boys swimming team returned to action with a dual against Moorhead on Jan. 4 in Moorhead.
The Spuds came away with a 116-60 victory over the Yellowjackets. According to head coach Trent Swanson, the Yellowjackets had a good night in Moorhead. The team continues to grow, adding three new members, bringing their total up to 16.
“The attitudes and effort that these boys are giving to the program are a direct link to how their times they are achieving. We have been putting in some of the hardest practices that I have ever attempted as a coach and mixing in a great deal of technique work as well,” Perham/NYM head coach Trent Swanson said. “Endurance and technique along with work ethic is what makes a swimmer successful and our future is bright.”
Perham/NYM senior Aaron Wegscheid had a strong meet. He captured a first place finish in the 50 freestyle and a second place finish in the 500 freestyle. He had a time of 25.28 for the 50, while his time of 6:07.41 had him second in the 500.
Wegscheid was a member of the 200 freestyle relay team that finished first as well. Kyle Swanson, Jett Karels, Kevin Swanson and Wegscheid finished with a time of 1:53.19, earning top honors. The team of Hermie Frost, Quentin Frohling, Jonah Bieger and Luke Becker came in with a time of 2:37.61 for second.
“These boys have been working hard since the last meet and we are seeing some really good things happen,” Swanson said. Max George had a really grueling second half of the meet and cut time when we expected him to be dead tired, he kept on pushing and kept on dropping time. Luke Becker had a great meet. Wegscheid was on fire last night and he showed his team what hard work and determination can do. I believe that his team will answer with continued effort and growth.”
The Yellowjackets return to the pool with a meet in Park Rapids on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. The Yellowjackets will compete in the Bemidji Invitational on Friday, Jan. 12 as well.
